Understanding your soil type: sand, clay, silt and loam

Every soil is some mix of sand, silt and clay particles, and that mix decides how it drains, how it holds nutrients, and how it needs to be managed. A five-minute jar test at home gives a rough but useful read on which you have.

The jar test

Fill a clear jar about a third full with soil from the garden, top it up with water, shake well, and let it settle overnight undisturbed. Sand settles first at the bottom, then silt, then clay on top as the finest particles, giving a rough visual ratio of the three.

Sandy soil

Drains fast and warms early in spring, but does not hold water or nutrients well. It needs more frequent watering and benefits heavily from regular compost, which builds water- and nutrient-holding capacity over time.

Clay soil

Holds water and nutrients well but drains slowly and compacts easily underfoot or under standing water. Added organic matter is the single best long-term fix; raised beds or berms help drainage in the meantime.

Loam: the target

A balanced mix of sand, silt and clay with good structure — most vegetables do best here, and it is what every soil-improvement effort is really working toward. Regularly adding compost moves any starting soil type closer to loam over the years.
