Drip irrigation for a home vegetable garden

Drip irrigation delivers water slowly, straight to the root zone, through tubing laid along the bed. It is a bigger upfront project than a hose, and for most vegetable gardens it pays that back quickly in water saved and disease avoided.

Why drip beats a sprinkler

Water goes to the soil, not the leaves, cutting the fungal disease that overhead watering encourages, and it does not evaporate off wet foliage or blow off target in wind. Drip systems typically use 30–50% less water than a sprinkler for the same result.

The basic parts

A pressure regulator and filter fitted at the tap, a main supply line running to the bed, drip tape or emitter tubing laid along the rows, and end caps to close the loop.

Laying it out in a bed

One line down the row for widely spaced crops like tomatoes and peppers. Two lines per bed for closely spaced crops like carrots and salad greens, so the whole root zone gets wetted rather than a narrow strip.

Running it

A simple timer at the tap takes the guesswork out of when and how long to run it. Check emitters for clogging a couple of times a season, more often with hard or unfiltered water.
